People just don't get this place. Where can you get a 2" thick roast beef sandwich for $3.75. Or try and find a ham and cheese for $3.50. The deli meat is fresh , the onion is cut while you watch her make it. Milk shakes with 2 items milk and ice.cream. The lady is the nicest person you would want to know. Try it ...line forms in front of the meat display.

Had my first shake here last weekend, creamy with tons of ice cream. Good stuff! Service was excellent and will make it there again.

High quality old fashioned sandwiches, ice cream, shakes and some convenience items. I enjoyed a sandwich and milkshake, thought they were excellent. Cash and take out only.

We'd assumed this place was long closed but it's been running for 41 years. The hours of 11 to 5 M-SAT threw us off. There is also a very small open sign on the door. The ice cream was good. They have about 16 flavors. You can get a cake cone or a milkshake. The sandwiches we skipped. The place is very clean. All prices are good. It's a good place to take kids or to stop at on a bike ride. There's room inside and outside but no tables or chairs.

A Spring day at the end of April. A sandwich made fresh, one at a time, with the choice of lettuce-tomato-cheese-onion-mayo-mustard. A lady working hard, on her own, making one sandwich at a time and wrapping it in wax paper. This is old fashioned vintage good times being had. You will want to add a milkshake to your $3.50 meal. Be sure to tell the "Lady" to keep the change! Keep it classy people-cause this aint no starbucks.

Bottom Line: Sweet, simple and pleasantly old-fashioned. Duchess Variety Store sells deli sandwiches, Utz chips, ice cream and milk shakes. Everything is simple but well executed. There are not any tables here so plan to take your feast with you. Speaking of planning, this is a cash business so bring your greenbacks. The staff is friendly and the prices are very reasonable. This clean and simple eatery is very charming.

Found this place when looking for a little hole in the wall type of joint to grab a quick lunch. If quick and simple is that you are looking for, this is the place. It' super cheap. Sandwiches are either 2.50 or 3.50 depending on what you get. And it's simple stuff like turkey, ham, cheese, bologna, roast beef, liverwurst and the like. White or wheat bread. It's straightforward stuff but portions aren't small. You get more than you paid for. Chips and sodas are available. The thing to get is the milkshake. Delicious. Several flavors. The older woman who runs the place is very sweet. Great place if you are looking to grab something quick and cheap for a picnic.

They have a small menu. But the food is good and fresh. You see them making the orders right in front of you. No hidden MSG or some secret illegal sauce being put in. They have 12 different flavors of ice cream or you could mix them up if you like. I got their Roast Beef sandwich, Liverwurst sandwich, and a large milkshake with Peanut Butter and Cookies N Cream mixed in! The sandwiches were good and the milkshake was delicious! On a hot and very humid day, a milkshake will make your day!

She didn't wash her hands! She made a sandwich, took the money, then without washing hands she began making the sandwich for the next customer. Saw this for a few customers before I left without eating.

You can't beat the deliciousness and simplicity in these sammies! You'll be hard pressed to find anyone with this quality sandwich at such a low price. I feel guilty that the epicenter isn't higher because they're that good. Don't let the outside fool you. These are terrific sandwiches!

Good food, great people, unbeatable prices. Can't go wrong here. Don't forget the milkshake!!!

Oh Wow! I love sandwiches, and this place makes the best ! and you cannot beat the price. It was like mom made it for you, but this time she bought the best meats and cheeses! Try the roast beef!

This place is fantastic! Fantastic milkshakes, great fresh made sandwiches, and super cheap! I didn't discover this place until recently because of their limited hours, but if you can get there it's totally worth it!

If you've got a 9 to 5 in the city, then you're missing your chance at a great mikshake at the Duchess in Ellicott City. Turkey Hill ice cream. Milk. Blend. That's the kind of milkshake that brings all the boys to the yard, but it's only available from about 11 am to 5 pm weekdays at the Duchess, a longtime takeout a block off Rte 103 just east of Rte 29. You get a simple cup filled with creamy chocolate or vanilla -- smooth enough to drink with a straw, but thick like ice cream coating your mouth. Seriously, split a milkshake. I drank an entire cup, and I felt like I needed to run a mile just to work off the fat. Like Touche Touchet or Oh, What A Cake for cupcakes, the Duchess is a perfect place to take a kid if you're looking for an adventure on a summer day. Simple sweets and big smiles. You're not going to do better.

I grew up on the ice cream cones and milkshakes at this place (read it was Turkey Hill brand somewhere, though I just remember the heaping portions and the Hungarian accents of the owners). It has had the original family owners for more than 30 years, and after all this time it's just as charming. Read up on the Duchess's history here: theviewnewspapers.com/co…

This store is a throwback to the 50's and 60's where a store like this can just focus on sandwiches and shakes. The sandwiches are great here. I had a ruben that more than filled me up. The bread was toasted correctly and the pastrami and sauces were a good match. Its a quaint shop behind the Citgo gas station near Long Gate on Route 103 across the street from the firestation. If you are tired of the run of the mill burgers, subs and KFC, this is a great alternative for a sandwich. Highly recommended for that quick meal if you are in the area.

In the late '90s, I worked right around the corner from Duchess, an inauspicious husband-wife run sandwich shop just off Maryland Route 103 at US 29. I would walk over once a week or so for a no-thrills roast beef or bologna sandwich. Nothing fancy...the white bread was the type where you could tear off a little piece and roll it between your fingers to make a little dough ball, and the wheat wasn't much better. It was also the type of place where you had to order the "right way", and in the right sequence, which took some trial and error. And heaven help you if you, say, asked for rye: you'd be asked to go across the street to the grocery store. (True story.) The "Variety" in the store's name was ostensibly due to the fact that the place was stacked to the gills with antiques, dusty knick-knacks of every shape and size, old National Geographics, artwork covering every wall (all for sale!), and so forth. The Mr. even tried to sell me his cash register once. (One of those old mechanical types...I should have taken him up on it in hindsight.) Occasionally, I'd get a shake--preferably with Hershey's peanut butter ice cream. The Mrs. ran the ice cream and shake station, and she would make them so thick that I'm not quite sure which knocked me out for the afternoon after drinking one of them: the fat and the sugar, or the energy expended trying to pull the concoction through the straw. Alas, the house that once functioned as my office down a piece on Route 103 is long gone, replaced by 55-and-better apartments a few years ago, but Duchess lives on, as I recently discovered after a 10-plus year hiatus. The Mr. has passed on, and the Mrs. now runs the place. Nothing has changed in terms of the food, but, wow, the interior...what a difference. The space has done a complete 180 from a study in hoarding to full-on minimalist. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, in there that is not absolutely necessary for functionality: a rack for the chips, a few soda coolers, an ice cream freezer, and the deli cooler, leaving an almost eerie emptiness to the rest of the space. Put it this way: I don't even think there's a clock. Unfortunately, that also means that there are no tables or chairs, much less a counter, so you're going to have to sit on the sidewalk out front or eat in your car. But no matter. A sliced-on-demand bologna sandwich that is stacked so high that you can hardly fit your mouth around it, an Utz crab chips, and a Boylan soda (vintage soda pop from NJ made with real cane sugar in glass bottles...never seen it anywhere else...try the birch beer) and you've barely cracked $5. Where else can you eat like that these days? Top shelf lunch meats (roast beef, salami, turkey, ham) are a dollar more than bologna or liverwurst, mind you. Shocking, I know. Just don't ask for rye.

U can't beat a real ice cream cone for just $1.75 nowadays or milkshake for $3.75. Rich and creamy, about 8 flavored to choose from.

A sandwich is a sandwich, so my 3-star rating is accurate regarding the food here at Duchess. The ambiance, however is reminiscent of the famous SNL skit with John Belushi yelling, "Cheeseburger cheeseburger. No fries, chip! No Coke, Pepsi!" crossed with Seinfeld's famous Soup Nazi. This is a fun little deli that serves up sandwiches and soups their way. You'll enjoy it.
